Agree the checklist and the timing first
Read the relevant check-in information and discuss any cleaning priorities with the agent or landlord. Arrange cleaning after belongings and rubbish have been removed, while leaving time before the handover. Confirm who holds the keys, how access will work and whether water and electricity will remain available.
Kitchen: empty before you clean
Clear cupboards and drawers so their interiors can be reached. Work through cupboard fronts, worktops, the sink, taps, splashbacks and hob using suitable products. Check whether the agreed scope includes appliance interiors. Ovens and fridge-freezers often need separate time and preparation, so do not assume they are part of every quotation.
Bathroom: work through the details
Clean the toilet, basin, bath or shower and accessible tiles using products appropriate for each finish. Include taps, mirrors and reachable ledges. Follow the product directions rather than mixing chemicals or trying several treatments together. Flag damaged seals or maintenance issues separately from cleaning tasks.
Bedrooms and living rooms: start with the surfaces
Dust accessible ledges, skirting boards and door frames, then clean suitable doors, handles, internal glass and mirrors. In a furnished property, empty wardrobes and drawers and agree which furniture surfaces will be cleaned. Routine vacuuming and specialist carpet or upholstery cleaning are different jobs.
Hallways and floors: finish at the exit
Once the other surfaces are complete, vacuum carpets and clean suitable hard floors. Plan the route so you do not immediately walk over a freshly cleaned area. Check stairs, accessible handrails and the entrance, and allow floors to dry before the property is used.
Do a final walk-through
Use the agreed checklist for the final check and keep the written quote or invoice. Record any existing damage or maintenance concerns separately. Cleaning can meet an agreed scope, but the outcome of a tenancy deposit assessment may involve other matters. Leave enough time to discuss any specific cleaning concern before key handover.
One thing to remember
Agree the scope before booking, leave the property accessible, and make sure specialist extras are discussed explicitly. A clear handover plan helps everyone involved.
